What to Expect at an Audition

Auditions can be stressful and we endeavour to make them as relaxed as possible; we believe in a level playing field for all and we do not therefore hold ‘open’ group auditions. Auditions are by appointment for a specific date and time and are held individually with the director.

  • The audition format envisages simple staging and movement – not just sitting down reading parts.
  • Recall auditions, when desired by, and at the discretion of the director, may be called.
  • You may audition for as many roles as you wish within the time constraints of an audition, or as specified by a director in the audition pack.
  • Readers-in will be present at every audition to play other roles, as necessary, in scenes selected for audition. Readers-in will not be auditioning themselves for a part in the play. So far as possible, the same readers-in will be at every audition session.
  • Directors will prepare an audition pack with thumbnail sketches of the roles available and details of selected audition pieces; this will be sent to everyone who books an audition.
  • Directors will expect that auditions will be well prepared; that is, that auditionees will have thought about the character(s) in physical and vocal terms and understand the relationships with other characters in selected scenes.
  • Learning audition scenes or speeches is not a requirement. However, learning an audition piece greatly assists in your freedom to move and to interpret; if you have not acted with us before, it is a helpful indication for the director of your ability to learn lines.
  • We highly recommend that those auditioning will have read the whole play in advance.

Directors will always be happy to advise on any aspect of the process.
