What does the second-best hangman in England do on the day Parliament abolish hanging? In his small Oldham pub, (ex) executioner Harry Wade holds court, surrounded by a motley crew of hangers-on all seeking his reaction to the news.
When a mysterious stranger turns up, a series of twists and turns are set in motion leading to an astonishing climax.
